Contraindications:

  • First Trimester Prenatal Massage: Massage is not advised during first trimester of pregnancy. It is important that expecting mothers consult with their OB/GYN prior to any massage service in any trimester.

Massage affects the blood vessels, and so people with high blood pressure or a heart condition should receive light, sedating massages and should consult their physician for approval prior to having a massage service.
  • Cancer: Cancer can spread through the lymphatic system, and because massage increases lymphatic circulation, it could potentially cause complications. Simple, caring touch is recommended, however massage strokes that stimulate circulation are not. Cancer patients should consult their physician for approval prior to having a massage service.
  • Blood Clots: Massage increases circulation and your therapist will work in the flow of the lymph system as well as towards the heart. Patients under the care of a physician for blood clots must consult with them for approval prior to having any massage services.
  • Communicable Diseases: of any kind is a contraindication for massage service.
  • General Illnesses: Can result in increased symptoms from massage. Massage increases circulation and releases toxins, until those toxins have been flushed through the lymph or urinary systems, increased symptoms may occur.
  • Alcohol Consumption/Hung Over: Massage will stimulate the circulatory system and may enhance symptoms of alcohol, massage is not recommended.
  • Open Wound/Recent Surgery: These areas cannot be touched or massaged.
  • Pain Medication or Sedatives: These medications are a contraindication for massage. Pain medications and sedatives decrease the bodies’ ability to acknowledge discomfort. Also, sedatives and pain medications can be accelerated by increased circulation and can cause adverse side affects to these medications to occur.

  • Self-Tanners may be removed during a massage service.
  • Clients with sensitive skin or who break out easily should advise their therapist of this during consult.
  • Clients who bruise easily should advise their therapist.

  • If there is any area(s) you wish to not have massaged, advise your therapist.
  • If the pressure is too much or not enough, let your therapist know.
  • If the temperature is uncomfortable, advise your therapist
  • It is important that all massage clients double their normal daily water intake the day of a massage service to aid the body in flushing out the toxins released from the muscles during massage services. Detoxifying mineral baths are also recommended post massage. This will aid the client in not feeling groggy or sore the day after a massage, (especially important with deep tissue sessions)
